"You who are safe
in your tepid houses,
you find yourself coming back in the evening
hot food and friends friends:
consider if this is a man,
who works in the mud,
who does not know peace,
who struggles through bread,
who die for a yes or no... "

(Primo Levi, Early verses of the poem Shemą epigraph in If this is a man)
Primo Levi

First Michele Levi (Turin, July 31, 1919 - Turin, April 11, 1987) was a writer, partisan and Italian chemist, author of stories, memories, poems and novels. Anti-Fascist Partisan, on December 13, 1943, was arrested by Nazi-fascists in Valle d'Aosta, first sent to a collection camp of all Jews in Fossoli and in February of the following year, deported to the concentration camp of Auschwitz as a Jew.

Escaped to the lager, he returned adventurously to Italy, where he devoted himself with the task of telling atrocities seen and suffered.
His most famous novel, his debut work, If this is a man who recounts his terrible experiences in the Nazi extermination camp, he is considered a classic of world literature, entering into the line of autobiographical memorials and so-called neorealism.
Graduated in chemistry, some of his works show direct and indirect references to this branch of science.
